International Conference

Antonio Brioschi and the New Instrumental Style of the 18th Century in Lombardy:

Historic-critical Study, Performing practice, Production

Alessandria, Palazzo Cuttica,

September 20- 21, 2008

The conference, centred around Antonio Brioschi’s figure (ca. 1725 – 1750), will develop along three major guidelines.

First, the composer’s rediscovery provides the opportunity to reconsider the general instrumental production of the Eighteenth Century in Lombardy.

Second, it permits to verify a working hypothesis, or better a critical, historic-geographic challenge, which focalizes on his role and on that of other Milanese or in Lombardy active composers, who deserve to be considered essential for the definition of a new instrumental style of European significance.

Third, the studies on Brioschi become a proper moment for matching musicological research with the study of the performing practice.

Furthermore, the conference provides a moment for reflection within a greater project, the Milanese Symphonie Archives, whose objective is the collection of the Lombard symphonic repertoire of the 18th Century. It also aims at coordinating the different aspects of historic-critical research, performing practice, musical organisation, editorial and disco-graphic production.

The project’s main objectives include:

 the creation of a research centre devoted to methodological collection, sources digitalization and the study of Lombard composers of the 18th Century, particularly of those composers who show a progressive stylistic approach and a more European-oriented personality;

 the publication of a collection containing these authors’ most significant compositions (the first volumes will be dedicated to Antonio Brioschi, Fortunato Chelleri, Nicola Antonio Zingarelli); Aim of the collection is the publication of works that meet the needs of critical and musicological criteria and, at the same time, comply with performing practice‘s requirements;

 the publication of a disco-graphic collection;

 the organisation of classes and workshops on historical performing practice.

The upcoming event, that can be considered a first step towards a more comprehensive project involving different subjects and institutions (among others, the Atalanta Fugiens Association, the Music Department of the Faculty of Arts, Music and Show, University of Milan, Casa Ricordi and Sony BMG Music) has an ultimate end: to promote the study, performance, and diffusion of a musical repertoire underestimated so far.
